Project Information

Southeast Case #  SE 2019-020

Address: 15401 Miles Ave
Company: Then Design
Architect: Adam Paris
Description:

The project site is located close to the intersection of Miles Avenue and E. 160th Street. The project site is the former Frederick Douglass Park where ballfields, tennis courts, parking, and a playground were located. The property was divided into 2 parcels as part of the master plan set forth by the city and CMSD. The western portion of the site will be the home for the new JFK High School which is currently under construction. The eastern portion of the site will be home for the new Ward 1 Recreation Center. Both projects will share the site amenities and parking as part of the master planning agreement.

The new recreation center project includes the new construction of a one-story building and site work. The new building includes a large gymnasium, fitness room, aerobics room, locker rooms, community rooms, arts and crafts room, tots room, restrooms, offices, and a large gallery (lobby) space. The project is also considering a new lap pool and recreation pool as alternates. The base bid project is 29,020 sf, Alternate 1 project is 35,390 sf (lap pool option), and the Alternate 2 project is 41,345 sf (lap and lifestyle pool option). The building will include pre-engineered buildings for the gymnasium and pool buildings. These structures will be clad with modular brick at the base and prefinished metal panel above. The community rooms and gallery portions of the building will be conventional construction with load bearing masonry walls, steel bar joists, and metal decking. The exterior will include built with modular brick, aluminum storefront and curtain wall, and aluminum composite metal panels at the gallery and entrance canopy. The project also includes site improvements around the 2-existing baseball/softball fields. The improvements include relocating an existing playground, installing a new splash pad, new trees and landscaping, parking, and new pedestrian walks. The baseball fields have been re-graded and repaired as part of the JFK Highschool project.
