BROOKLYN CENTRE HISTORIC DISTRICT – 3006 DENISON AVENUE Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for the demolition of the house.  If demolished, plans call for the house to be replaced with green space and parking for five cars.

DESIGN REVIEW COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION The Brooklyn Centre Design Review Committee recommended denial of the demolition.  They recommended that the development corporation contact the Cleveland Housing Network about potential reuse.

BROOKLYN CENTRE HISTORIC DISTRICT – DONAHUE FOOT CLINIC – 3731 PEARL ROAD  Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for the construction of a one – story addition to the rear of the house.  The proposed addition will include siding and windows matching those on the main building.

WITNESS Jim Malik (Architect).

DESIGN REVIEW COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION The Brooklyn Centre Design Review Committee recommended approval of the building addition, with the condition that the new windows match the existing, that the proposed ramp is screened with shrubbery, and that the walk on the north side of the property is retained.

 

EAST BOULEVARD HISTORIC DISTRICT – EAST 98TH STREET Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for the construction of a two - story house.

WITNESSES

DESIGN REVIEW COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION The East Boulevard Design Review Committee reviewed plans at an August 4, 2004 meeting.  The Committee had the following issues regarding the new construction.

1. The possibility of re-orienting the garage with the drive directly from the alley.

2. Accurate context plan that shows the setback of the house in relationship to adjoining houses.

3. Street elevation that shows the proposed new construction with the adjoining houses to the north and the house to the south.

4. Landscape plan that shows planting and fencing.

5. Larger or more pronounced porch.

6. More pronounced eaves.

7. Hardy plank rather than vinyl siding for building gables.

8. Wood or aluminum windows rather than vinyl.

The East Boulevard Design Review Committee took no action on the proposal but asked for several changes at the first meeting and will meet August 11, 2004.

 

OHIO CITY HISTORIC DISTRICT – KENTUCKY GARDENS – WEST 38TH AND FRANKLIN Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for the construction of a green house in the Kentucky Gardens.  The proposed structure will be 36’ long by 14’ wide and 13’ tall.  It will be sided with particle board, have a white roof, and will be glazed along the southern elevation.  The structure is an experimental greenhouse that will generate its own power.

DESIGN REVIEW COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION The Ohio City Design Review Committee will meet on August 5, 2004.

 

CLIFTON – WEST BOULEVARD HISTORIC DISTRICT – WILSHER BUILDING – 10429 CLIFTON BOULEVARD  application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for the installation of 9’7 1/8” long x 1’10” tall sign for Giovanna’s Restaurant.  It will include 3/8” thick aluminum plate letters mounted to 2” x 5” rectangular aluminum tubing.

WITNESS Bruce Farkas (Signature Sign Co.).

DESIGN REVIEW COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION The Clifton – West Boulevard Design Review Committee recommended approval of the sign, as submitted.

 

EAST 4TH STREET HISTORIC DISTRICT – RAINBOW BUILDING – EAST 4TH STREET

Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for storefront renovation of the Rainbow Building and the construction of a one – story penthouse above the existing rooftop.  The storefront will include plate glass windows, with a new bulkhead, the elimination of transom and windows.  The second story windows will be replaced.  Exterior materials for the penthouse will include a medium brown brick veneer, a copper standing seam roof, a ceramic tile below the windows, and a Hanover Lantern – St. Augustine #b22412 lamp to be installed.

DESIGN REVIEW COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION The Historic Gateway Design Review Committee recommended approval of the building renovation, as planned.

CLEVELAND LANDMARK NOMINATION

CLIFTON – WEST BOULEVARD HISTORIC DISTRICT councilman Westbrook has asked the Landmarks Commission to exclude the Walworth Industrial property from the Clifton – West Boulevard Historic District.  He said that the district was created to protect housing and that the designation provides an undue hardship for the property owner.
